Austin Symphony Orchestra (512/476-6064, 888/4-MAESTRO) presents a family concert with Joe McDermott and the Smart Little Creatures at the Symphony Square Amphitheatre on June 3. Come early and visit the Instrument Petting Zoo. A nationally recognized children’s artist based in Austin, McDermott has written and released five children’s recordings and was a 2003 Parents’ Choice Award winner. ASO returns with its third Summer of presenting free ensemble concerts under the gazebo in Wooldridge Park, running May 28 - August 20. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and blanket and make it a family affair. ASO also presents Children’s Day Art Park every Wednesday morning in June and July (except July 5) at Symphony Square. This Summer program features local musicians, dancers, storytellers, magicians, mimes, and crafts people. Local musicians include Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico, Bill Oliver & Jon Emery, Cowgirl Sue’s Teddy Bear Picnic, Beto y los Fairlanes, and The Biscuit Brothers. The State Theatre (512/469-SHOW, Austin; 866/4GET-TIX) presents Triple Espresso through May 21st. A highly caffeinated comedy, Triple Espresso tells the rags-to-rags story of an aspiring trio whose bid for showbiz fame and fortune ended in four minutes on national television. It’s a frothy forget-all-your worries evening of entertainment! From May 31 - June 18, Bunk Bed Brothers, a comedy by Pat Hazell and Matt Goldman, two former Seinfeld writers, bounce around the State. This nostalgic comedy captures an hilarious, all-night bull session between brothers spending an evening in their childhood bedroom. Surrounded by bad ‘70s shag carpeting, Hot Wheels cars, and other remains of yesteryear, they relapse into giddy jokes and rivalries and find out what it really means to be brothers. UT-Austin’s Frank Erwin Center (512/477-6060, Austin) brings you Disney On Ice’s presentation of Pixar’s The Incredibles in a Magic Kingdom Adventure, May 10-14, and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, June 28 - July 2. We all know how super hero stories go the good guy gets the bad guy and saves the day. Well, what if there are five good guys but they are more than a little funny and the bad guy is less than a little human? Don’t miss The Incredibles as they skate through the Erwin Center playing in the Magic Kingdom and battling the evil Syndrome robot. Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum (512/936-4649, Austin) features the special exhibit It Still Ain’t Braggin’ If It’s True, May 27 - September 10. Still Ain’t Braggin’ explores the qualities of Vision, Friendship, Perseverance, Pride, Showmanship, and Swagger through one-of-a-kind objects and the stories they tell. On May 26, the Museum will hold a sneak exhibit preview and a free concert (with Conjunto legend Flaco Jimenez) so bring your blankets and chairs. The exhibit includes the flavorful story of Swagger of Texas-sized proportions. For example, Gladys Farek Holub bought a cement mixer for her bakery in Cistern, Texas and, with it, created a 150-pound Texas-shaped fruitcake claimed to be the world’s largest. Gladys took her Lone Star confection to appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman. And, by popular demand from the original 2001 exhibition, |
