Surfacing at the Museum’s IMAX Theatre is Deep Sea 3D through August 3. Through the magic of IMAX 3D technology, audiences will be transported below the ocean surface to swim with some of the planet’s most unique, dangerous, and colorful creatures — from the unusual Wolf Eel to the Giant Pacific Octopus. Deep Sea 3D brings moviegoers face to face with these underwater inhabitants to witness their peculiar and amazing behavior as they rely on one another for survival.
Texas Natural & Western Swing Festival (888/200-5620) includes delicious food and Western Swing music in San Marcos on May 20 on the banks of the San Marcos River. Check out Texas-grown, Texas-produced, and Texas-designed items offered on the historic Downtown Square. The downtown event will feature a Texas-grown farmer’s market, Western Swing music, Heritage Crafts and demonstrations, exhibits, a variety of Texas food, and other live entertainment.
Fredericksburg Crawfish Festival (866-TEX-FEST [839-3378]) lets the good times roll on May 26- 27 in Fredericksburg’s Marktplaz. The Festival features Cajun food, music, fun, a Kids’ area, and arts and crafts shopping. Plus a rock-climbing wall to challenge the young and the old. Laissez les bon temps roulet with mouth-watering crawfish plates, red potatoes, corn, jambalaya, and fried fish plates while listening to music from Ponty Bone and the Squeeze Tones, Dr. Zog, Zydeco Angels, and Zydeco Blanco. And for those who don’t like crawfish, they also offer hamburgers, corn dogs, German Tacos, and plenty of German sausage — what Fredericksburg is famous for.
Texas State Arts & Crafts Fair (830/896-5711) will be held in Kerrville on May 26-29. This year’s Fair displays the works of 200 of Texas’ finest artists and artisans. While browsing, tap your toes to the rhythm of Texas music ranging from bluegrass to classical. Or take in a demonstration of the Badlands Ranger Company.
Texas Folklife Festival (210/458-2390) celebrates the cultural diversity of Texas on June 8-11 held on the grounds of the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio. Festivities at this 35th annual Festival will include food, dance, music, arts and crafts — all depicting various cultures and cultural traditions. Ethnic groups representing 40 countries of the world come together to share mouth-watering cuisine, traditional dances, homespun tales, lively music, and more.
Blanco Lavender Festival (830/833-5101) will be in Blanco on June 10-11. During the Festival, nine farms will be open to the public for tours and cutting lavender blooms. Since all farms are within 20 minutes driving distance, visitors can stop at several in one day. Each farm will offer activities and events related to lavender, such as classes in aromatherapy and demonstrations of lavender oil distillation. During the Festival, a lavender market will be set up on the grounds of the historic Old Blanco County Courthouse. Vendors and artists from across the Hill Country will sell lavender-related products as well as other types of fine crafts and gifts. The Festival kicks off with a Growers’ Dinner the weekend before. The buffet menu will feature a wide assortment of lavender dishes.
